Toyota Land Cruiser Hydrogen Engine Launching Soon

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Toyota also seems serious about developing a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Not long ago, it was reported that Toyota would also launch a Land Cruiser with a hydrogen engine.

Apart from developing battery-based electric vehicles, Toyota also remains focused on developing fuel cell-based electric vehicles, aka hydrogen engines.

Toyota already has the Mirai, a premium sedan whose engine is powered by a hydrogen engine. After that, Toyota also developed hydrogen engines on the GR Yaris, Corolla Cross, AE86, and most recently on the HiAce.

Quoted from Drive.com.au, Friday (17/11/2023), Toyota said it was looking for hydrogen propulsion for the Land Cruiser, but it was unclear whether it would use a twin-turbo V6, V8, or fuel cell electric technology.

The president of Toyota’s hydrogen factory, Mitsumasa Yamagata, said that this alternative fuel is suitable for vehicles such as the Land Cruiser which are used to tow and transport heavy loads.

“There is a possibility to adapt (hydrogen fuel engines) to these large vehicles, including the Land Cruiser,” said Yamagata, at the launch of the hydrogen HiAce, recently.

The hydrogen HiAce prototype is powered by a 3.5 L twin-turbo V6 engine, the engine found in the Lexus LX 600 and overseas versions of the Land Cruiser 300 Series, which is typically fueled by unleaded petrol.

It is rumored that Toyota could use a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter hydrogen-fueled V8, adapted from the Lexus RC F and LC500 sports cars, developed in partnership with Yamaha.

However, Yamagata added, hydrogen fuel cell technology, the same as that found in the Toyota Mirai sedan, has not been ruled out.

“Including the introduction (of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles), we are studying which vehicles have the appropriate technology,” Yamagata said.
