Construction has commenced on a substantial new development in Barkarbystaden, a thriving suburb northwest of Stockholm. Åke Sundvall and Järfälla municipality marked the start of this project with a new ceremony on Thursday for Block 9, one of the most centrally located sections of the emerging neighborhood.
Block 9 will feature approximately 300 new residences and around 8,000 square meters of commercial space. A direct entrance to Barkarbystadens tunnelbanestation at street level will connect the development to Stockholm’s metro network, with the station slated to open in December 2027. The first residents can move into their new homes in spring 2029.
This development signifies the fourth block Åke Sundvall has undertaken in Barkarbystaden. Eva Ullberg, chair of Järfälla’s municipal board, noted that the company’s ongoing investment reflects their confidence in the area’s trajectory. “Åke Sundvall’s repeated investment and start of construction in Barkarbystaden demonstrates their belief in the location, the public transit access, and the potential here,” Ullberg said.

The architecture firm BAU designed the project, which comprises three tall towers visible from a distance. These towers rest atop a podium intended for offices, healthcare, and wellness facilities. Residents will enjoy access to a rooftop courtyard and viewing platform, while the ground floor will house retail, restaurants, cafes, and the metro entrance.
Martin Sundvall, CEO of Åke Sundvall, acknowledged the new as a significant milestone years in the making. “Block 9 is a project we’ve collaborated with Järfälla municipality on for many years,” he stated. “It will add a unique dimension to the area with the metro integrated into the building, along with residences, healthcare, dining, and workplaces. This will create a lively, 24/7 hub and contribute to one of Stockholm’s most cherished areas.”
The design creates a small, self-contained community within the block, with public transit seamlessly integrated into daily life. This approach is common in new Swedish developments near transit hubs.

Over the next decade, Barkarby is set to evolve into a fully-fledged urban area. The long-term plan involves thousands of new apartments, workplaces, hotels, shops, restaurants, and facilities for sports, healthcare, culture, education, and elder care. Once operational, the metro connection will serve as the backbone linking these various functions to central Stockholm.
This project aligns with the broader trend of suburban densification across the Stockholm region. Whether Block 9 becomes the “beloved area” its developers envision depends on both the execution of the project and the broader economic conditions influencing residential demand in the coming years.
