Abu Dhabi has announced a significant infrastructure upgrade in Mussafah, targeting 13 kilometres of major roads with the aim of alleviating congestion and reducing journey times. The full project includes a new expressway, two new bridges linking the industrial district to Mohammed bin Zayed City, and substantial improvements to multiple junctions. This initiative shows Abu Dhabi’s commitment to developing its transport networks to support economic activity and urban expansion.
The core of the development involves the construction of a new expressway along Street 8, designed to accommodate approximately 4,000 vehicles per hour. This dedicated route will effectively separate through-traffic from local vehicular movements, streamlining transit for commuters and businesses alike. The upgrade also encompasses enhancements to four junctions along the E30, alongside improved connections with Street 8 and the E20, and modifications to nine major intersections to optimize traffic flow.
Key to the project are two new bridges that will establish key links between Mussafah and Mohammed bin Zayed City. Additionally, a dedicated pedestrian bridge is part of the plan, prioritizing enhanced accessibility and road safety for residents and workers moving between these vital areas. These structural additions are expected to significantly improve connectivity and reduce bottlenecks that have historically impacted travel in the region.
Mussafah serves as one of Abu Dhabi‘s principal industrial and commercial hubs, its extensive road network catering to a diverse user base. Engineer Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director-General of Infrastructure Development at the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), highlighted the strategic design of the project. “Mussafah’s road network serves a wide range of users, from residents commuting to work and businesses transporting goods to people who rely on local journeys throughout the day,” Al Mazrouei stated.
He further explained that planning for these varied needs is essential to sustaining the area’s continuous growth. By separating through traffic from local access routes and strengthening connections with surrounding communities, the project is poised to bolster economic activity while simultaneously making daily commutes safer and more efficient.
Al Mazrouei also emphasised a forward-looking approach, ensuring the upgraded road network is prepared for future connections and anticipated development. This proactive planning aims to guarantee that current infrastructure decisions align with Abu Dhabi’s ongoing development trajectory, securing long-term benefits for the emirate’s transport system.
